Summary: Language creates reality. It can lead to encounters at eye level and recognition, but also to violations of dignity. The Equal Treatment Act prohibits discrimination through verbal harassment. Non-discriminatory and gender-sensitive language is essential for the equal treatment and equality of all genders. In collaboration with authors from various disciplines, the Ombud for Equal Treatment aims to provide practical guidelines for inclusive and respectful communication, regardless of gender identity, gender characteristics and gender expression. In doing so, it highlights possibilities for gender-sensitive wording, taking into account aspects of accessibility and technological infrastructure. This guide can help companies, institutions and individuals to develop an inclusive language culture in which gender diversity is naturally recognized.
We would like to thank the authors Boka En, Tobias Humer, Marija Petričević, Tinou Ponzer, Claudia Rauch and Katta Spiel for their extensive expertise in the development of this guide.
