00.05-00.25 Introduction and warm-up
Exercise 4c1: Where are you from?
Self-reflection: What culture do you come from and which aspects are important to you?
What do you need?
– flipchart sheets
– markers
What should you do?
– The room is divided into North, East, South and West (Europe, country or city (depending on the participants)
– Participants position themselves in the room at their place of residence
– Everyone introduces themselves briefly and tells something about what characterises the people in his / her country, place of residence, residential area or sports organisation
– Make groups of people from the same area and let them make a list of features together on a flipchart sheet
– Then ask the groups to think about three aspects they would like to keep and three aspects they would like to throw away
– Let the groups take up their position in the room again and ask the groups to present the result.
Trainers advice
– Ask questions such as: What’s so specific about it? What does / did this mean to you?
– Are the characteristics recognisable for the rest of the group? How do people assess the culture of the group in question from the outside?
– People probably mainly mention practices (symbols, heroes and rituals) and not directly values (from the inner ring of Hofstede’s onion that you will be working with in this workshop). So use this exercise as a bridge to: What is culture?
