Dealing with racism and discrimination

00.00 – 00.00: Responding to racism & discrimination (section 8)

Understand ways to deal with racism and discrimination

What do you need?
– Slides 49 – 61

What should you do?

– Pose questions in slide 49 to group e.g. “if I hold these attitudes, how would you deal with me in sport”?
– Spit group and ask them to answer questions in slide 50
– Take feedback after 10 minutes approx.
– Run through slide 52, explain that people who are ‘against’ equality and or have discriminatory attitudes can be dealt with via: Club ethos of inclusion that’s clearly stated & practiced, legislation, policies and practices in sport (and society more broadly), general consensus and behaviour of people in the club can also influence people’s behaviour!
– Continue with slides 53 -60 to reinforce examples of rules, and protocols
– Slide 61, show the video and reinforce the importance, especially for young people of speaking up about racism by telling someone you trust for example a coach, teacher, referee, etc, do not keep it to yourself (racism can have a significant psychological impact)

Trainers advice
–  Be careful not to rush this section as people will have questions on how to respond to concrete scenarios in sport

Give people the opportunity to think about how dealing with racism and discrimination relates to their own club,, sports group, or sports organization
