Introduction to the theme of discrimination and racism

01.45 – 02.00 Introduction to the theme of discrimination and racism
Participants experience what it means to belong to a minority and not be understood.

Exercise 2.6: Being different

What do you need?
– The questionnaire ‘Being different’

What should you do?
– Introduce the topic with the general explanation that we are all unique individuals with unique cultures. In our lives we have all felt that in a certain situation we were different from others or that a stereotypical statement was made about us. For example when someone says: “You’re always like this …” or “not suitable for someone like you …” Maybe you’ve even experienced discrimination?
– Participants are given the assignment: Think of a recent experience where you were treated differently from others and then fill in the yardstick ‘Being different’. Add up the numbers on the yardstick.
– Divide the group into groups of 3-4 people – Participants discuss their experiences based on the following questions: What happened during the incident? What did you think? How did you react? How did others think and react? How did the situation end?
– Plenary feedback: What was this like to do? What insight has it given you?
– Finally, present the powerpoint sheet ‘When does this affect us the most?’

Trainers advise
– The events / experiences do not necessarily have to be from the sports context
– Very sensitive experiences can be brought in. Create a safe atmosphere and agree that the discussions that take place are not shared with people outside the group
– Only clarifying and open questions are allowed. Be aware that judgments, opinions, and assumptions do not help the conversation.
