Introduction to the theme of diversity and culture

01.15 – 01-30 Introduction to the theme of diversity and culture

Exercise 2.4: Points of recognition
Participants gain insight into the extent to which products and activities of the sports organisation reflect the backgrounds of migrants (recognition)

What do you need?
– points of recognition checklist
– conclusion checklist
– clothespins in two different colors

What should you do?
– Make two piles of clothespins of the same color on two opposite sides of the room (use for example, red and blue clothespins)
– Ask the questions from the checklist one by one. Ask each question out loud twice before walking and simultaneously show the question in the powerpoint (in the presentation the questions run one-by-one with a mouse click)
– When answering the questions, the participants consider their own sports organisation
– Participants who have to answer the question with ‘yes’ take a blue clothespin and pin it to their clothes. If the answer is ‘no’, the participant in question chooses a red clothespin. After answering all the questions, the participants pinned quite a few clothespins to their clothes.
– From time to time, the trainer asks participants if they can explain their choice for a particular color.
– Then the participants count the number of red and the number of blue clothespins they have chosen.
– On the basis of the ‘conclusion of the points of recognition’, the trainer explains what it means for the recognisability of immigrants in the organisation if a participant has the most red or most blue clothespins.

Trainers advise
– If everyone from a board or representatives of the same sports organisation has done the checklist, see to what extent the answers to the questions match. Where opinions differ, it is interesting to discuss ‘why’. The discussion within the club or association is a first step towards improvement of the organisational culture, because it increases awareness.
