Making the sports offer suitable for women and girls

00.50 – 01.10: Making the sports offer suitable for women and girls
New solutions for the inclusion of women and girls arise, are selected and chosen by the whole group.

Activating Exercise 4a4: The story of …….
For migrant and refugee women, there are still many barriers to sports. Seven short videos, characterised by the colors of the rainbow, tell the problems or positivity encountered by migrant women in practicing sport in the countries where they were welcomed. You can find the links to the other six short videos of this series under the heading ‘materials’.

What do you need?
– Laptop, beamer, sound boxes
– Projection screen or wall
– Videos “The story of……”

What should you do?
– With these videos you can come up with different exercises. For example: Choose two videos and show them to inspire the group. Continue with exercise 4b4 (described below).
– You can also divide the group into three subgroups
– Make sure each group has a laptop/computer
– Each group will see two (out of seven) videos
– Stand in a semicircle and have everyone identify key personal learning points for the inclusion of migrant and minority women and girls after watching the videos
– As a trainer you make a list of the most important learning points on a flipchart or whiteboard
– Ask questions such as: “Is this recognisable?”, “How does your organisation work on the inclusion of women and girls?”, “What are your experiences with this?”, “Which step(s) are fairly easy to realise within your organisation?”

Trainers advice
– At the end of this exercise, you can ask the group to prioritise the learning points on the list. For example with a certain number of stickers or by putting lines with a marker at the 4 most important points.
– If the participants come from one or two organisations, you can have the points worked out further in policy and activities.
– You can also choose to do this exercise with a limited number of videos in plenary.

Activating Exercise 4b4: 1 – 2 – 4 – All!
With this method, measures are rapidly being devised to include more women and girls with a migration background in the sports organisation.

What do you need?
– Paper and pens
– Stop watch
– Space with plenty of room for movement
– Some good questions about the inclusion of migrant women and girls

What should you do?
– Make sure everyone has a pen and paper
– Ask question 1 and ask everyone to write an answer within 1 minute (self-reflection)
– Generate ideas in pairs, building on ideas from self-reflection. Participants have 1 minute to do this.
– Share and develop ideas from the pairs in foursomes (notice similarities and differences). 2 min.
– Ask, “What is one idea that stood out in your conversation?” Each group shares one important idea with all. 4 min.
– Repeat this cycle for other questions.
– Think about questions such as:
What could be a successful strategy to reach (recruit) the target group?
How could the sports offer better match the target group?
How could migrant women and girls be more involved in the organisation of the club?
How could we make the club more accessible to migrant women and girls?
– Add your own knowledge and experience to that of the group

Trainers advice
– Read the publication “Equal access and participation of migrant women and girls in sports” (available via link in ‘materials’) beforehand, so that you are able to increase the knowledge available in the group
– Keep an eye on whether everyone is included in the discussions
