Debate the question so as to come to a clear understanding about why we need to tackle racism & who is impacted.


What do you need?
– Slide 7 – 13
– Videos included in the presentation and/or found under ‘materials’
– Pdf’s with questions and answers “What does societal data tell us?”
– Pen and paper for participants
– Attitude line?

What should you do?
– Slide 7: Show video UEFA “No to racism”
– Ask: Why are players making this kind of statement/video?
– Discussion in small groups on why we need to tackle racism in sport and/or society?
–  Bring smaller groups back as one large group, take feedback on why tackle racism/discrimination.
– Slide 8: Make the point using the photo about players (coaches, officials) being active on racism and discrimination with the taking of the knee in this example.
– Slide 9: Make the point that players are not tolerating racism and abuse but speaking out and taking the matters to the police when needed. This underlines the impact of racism and its seriousness.
– Slide 10: Quickly ask Q1-Q4: “What does societal data tell us?” Ask participants to write down the correct answers.
– Slide 11: Reveal answers
– Slide 12: Show video clip. Ask for views on findings
– Slide 13: Use attitude line to highlight the extremes/opposites. Use reflective/socratic questions to talk about what influences where people are along the line especially the against pole of the line

Trainers advice
– Activating exercise 1 -2 provides background to drivers in sport for tackling racism, supported by societal statistical context/information.
They are designed to achieved 3 key outcomes:
– Reflection on why discussions and campaigns on racism and discrimination exist, and can be prominent in sport
– Get an initial understanding of how racism and discrimination in society can impact on people and sport
– Reflect on and understand the importance of people who do not experience racism or other forms of discrimination
being vocal about racism and discrimination!
