Introduction to the theme of discrimination and racism

02.00 – 02.15: Introduction to the theme of discrimination and racism
Awareness raising of participants about discriminatory situations occurring in sport.

Exercise 3.6: Discuss photos
– Participants become aware of different ways in which racism and discrimination occur in sport
– Participants assess situations from different points of view
– Participants think about the (un)desirability of top athletes to use their position for social issues

What do you need?
– assignment forms ‘Discuss photos’ (can be found under materials)
– PowerPoint presentation with photos

What should you do?
– Divide the group into 4 subgroups.
– Give the participants the assignment forms. Each group gets a different photo.
– Give the participants 8 minutes to discuss the photos in the subgroups.
– Plenary presentation per group (7 min.).
– Use the powerpoint to show the relevant photos in question, to the whole group.

Trainers advice
– Ask the group for a short response, but don’t spend too much time discussing.
– You can increase the knowledge of the participants with your own knowledge and experience. However, that is not necessary. The purpose of this exercise is mainly to introduce the theme and to experience what knowledge the participants already have about the subject.
– You can also choose to work with red and green cards with these photos, asking “Is this situation okay or not okay?”.
