Introduction to the theme of norms and values

02.15 – 02.30 Introduction to the theme of norms and values

Exercise 3.7: Arguments Cards
The arguments cards start great conversations with potential athletes and / or their parents. Our task is to listen without judgment and to empower participants in what is important to them.

What do you need?
– Sets of Arguments cards

What should you do?
– Ask the participants to arrange the argument cards in order of priority; from important to not important.
– Make one or two groups that prioritise the cards from their own insight and let the other group (s) put themselves in the shoes of the newcomers.
– Then you ask the different groups why this order of priority was chosen.
– Compare the results between the different groups.
– Could culture and norms & values influence what people consider important?
– The nice thing about these cards is that it doesn’t matter what people think is important. You can always tell that sports and exercise can be valuable to achieve their most important goals. Then you can explain how sports and exercise can contribute to this. For example: ‘By exercising a lot you become more tired and that has a positive effect on your sleep’ or ‘By exercising together you get in touch with peers and you can make new friendships’.

Trainers advice
You can use the cards during one-on-one conversations as well as in a group. For example in a training, but also at a parent meeting or in a language class.
