01.30 – 01.45 Introduction to the theme Women and girls
Which competences are represented in good management?

Exercise 1.5: Along the yardstick
Participants gain insight into predominantly (typicaly) feminine and masculine competences and see the importance of a good balance of competences for decisive management.

What do you need?
– Cards with following administrative competences: risk-taking, security, performance-oriented, coaching, confident, modest, individualistic, team-oriented, independent, collaborating, business approach, involved, factual, empathetic, analytical, practical, helicopter view, detailed, ambitious, social, respectful, appreciative.
– Powerpoint sheets on this topic
– Theory around yardstick competences

What should you do?
– Divide the group into groups of 4 and give each group a competency card set
– Ask each group to select the 6 most important competencies for good governance
– Each group places the 6 chosen cards in rows next to each other on the floor in the center of the room
– Ask the participants: “What do you notice when you look at the different rows of competence cards?”
– Show the powerpoint sheet with the division into competences primarily attributed to women or attributed to men. Ask whether this division influences satisfaction with the choice of competencies and if so, how?
– Explain what predominantly masculine competences mean for the functioning of a board and what predominantly feminine competences mean. Working on a good balance ensures better or good governance.

Trainers advice
– The division into typical feminine and masculine competences may meet with resistance in some countries. You could use alternative terms, such as: business-oriented versus social-oriented or Yin versus Yang or acting versus feeling. Use the terms that are common and accepted in your country.
– Variation: You can also ask without cards for competences that are important in good governance. Write them on a flip sheet and immediately arrange them in two rows (secretly): one row with typically masculine and one row with typically feminine competencies. After the inventory, ask if participants know the difference between the two rows. Use this to start the discussion and bring in your knowledge along the way.
