01.40 – 02.00 Introduction to the theme women and girls

Exercise 3.5: Engaging women in sport and exercise
Participants experience and discuss what it is like to connect with the motives of the target group

What do you need?
– beamer and laptop
– speakers
– projection screen or white wall
– flipchart sheets and markers
– tape

What should you do?
– Start by showing the video ‘This girl can’, which celebrates active women who are doing their thing no matter how they look, how well they do it or how sweaty they get. The video challenges the conventional idea of what exercise looks likeand reaches out to women of all backgrounds and ethnicities who feel left behind by traditional exercise.
– Divide the group into a number of subgroups Make sure each group has a flipchart sheet and markers
– Assignment: Discuss in the subgroup what impression the video has made on you. What did you notice about the video? What did you like or not like? What points for improvement do you see in your own organisation? Write the main points on the sheet.
– Discussion: each group presents the main findings in a plenary session.
– Present the key findings using the powerpoint sheet
– Conclude by showing the animated video ‘Us girls’, designed to increase and sustain young women’s participation in sport and physical activity within some of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities.
